What is AWS?

Makita’s Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS ) uses Bluetooth technology for wireless power-on and power-off communication between the equipped tool and dust extractor. Once connected via AWS , your dust extractor will automatically power on or off when your cordless tool starts or stops, running only when your cordless tool is in use. For added convenience, you can link up to 10 AWS tools to one AWS dust extractor / vacuum.

What are the benefits?

1. Eliminates Cords

Using our cordless LXT dust extractor with a cordless LXT tool means no more grounding issues, no re-plugging the cord, and reduced trip hazards.

2. Increases Productivity and Convenience

Intelligent Bluetooth communication using dust extractor only while tool is in use extends battery run time of the dust extractor, increasing productivity on a single charge. Also, by connecting up to 10 AWS tools at a time, just reconnect the dust hose when switching between power tools and reduce time wasted on manually powering multiple tools on and off.

3. Reduces Excessive Noise

The AWS dust extractor / vacuum runs only while the AWS power tool is in use, reducing continuous noise at the job or work site.

How it works

Step One:

Set the stand-by switch on the dust extractor to AUTO

Step Two:

Press the wireless activation button on the dust extractor for 3 seconds until the wireless activation lamp blinks in green

Step Three:

Then press the wireless activation button on the tool in the same way

Now you’re connected!

Just activate your power tool and the dust extractor will automatically start.

Less Friction, More Torque

Without brushes to apply friction, a Brushless motor can produce a greater measure of torque per weight. With more torque at your disposal less power is required for day to day use, adding to the motors efficiency and extending the overall lifetime as maintenance becomes less of an issue.

Extreme Protection Technology

Enhanced dust and drip-Resistant performance

XPT is a protective seal inside the tool engineered to provide improved water resistance by channelling water and dust from the tool’s key internal components

For use in outdoor applications or harsh environments, protection from dust and dripping water is enhanced compared with other models.

AVT – Anti Vibration Technology

AVT is designed to reduce vibrations normally transmitted to the operator.

These vibrations induce fatigue, accidents and long term injuries (RSI) etc.

AVT – saves time, money and compliance costs without reducing efficiency.

Makita used the science of earthquake engineering to introduce the safest heavy-duty power tools available with vibration ratings nearly 50% lower than comparable products. AVT uses the science of dynamic dampening to dramatically reduce rotary vibration and at the same time increase impact power by up to 75%.

Understanding Makita’s Cordless Platforms: CXT, LXT & XGT

Makita’s cordless ecosystem is built around three voltage platforms, each engineered for a different range of torque, runtime, and application.

12V max CXT

Makita’s compact sub-compact platform, designed for tools that prioritise size and weight over raw power — pistol-grip drivers, compact impact drivers, and precision tools for tight spaces, overhead work, or electrical/installation trades. CXT tools typically run on 2.0Ah–4.0Ah batteries and are built for control-critical tasks rather than heavy-duty output.

18V LXT

Makita’s flagship platform and the largest cordless tool ecosystem on the market, spanning drills, impact drivers, angle grinders, circular saws, reciprocating saws, and outdoor power equipment — all sharing a single battery interface across 1.5Ah to 6.0Ah capacities. LXT balances power-to-weight ratio for general trade and site use, and its cross-compatibility across hundreds of SKUs makes it the standard entry point for contractors building a multi-tool kit.

40V max XGT

Makita’s high-output platform, engineered to approach or exceed corded/petrol performance for heavy-duty applications — large-diameter grinders, high-torque demolition hammers, and higher-capacity outdoor equipment. XGT batteries (2.5Ah–8.0Ah) deliver higher sustained wattage output, and XGT tools are generally specced for continuous, high-load operation rather than intermittent use.

Many tools across all three platforms incorporate AVT (Anti-Vibration Technology), which uses counterbalance mechanisms to reduce vibration transmission to the operator — relevant for HAVS (Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome) exposure management on tools used for extended, high-vibration tasks like demolition hammers and reciprocating saws.

Battery Compatibility FAQ

Can I use a CXT battery in an LXT tool, or vice versa?

No. CXT (12V max), LXT (18V), and XGT (40V max) each use different battery connectors, voltages, and internal electronics. A battery only fits and functions within its own platform — a CXT tool takes CXT batteries only, an LXT tool takes LXT batteries only, and so on.

Can I use an 18V LXT battery in a 40V XGT tool?

No, not for powering the tool. However, Makita’s ADP10 adapter lets an XGT charger charge LXT batteries — a genuine official bridge between the two platforms, but for charging only. It does not let an LXT battery power an XGT tool, or an XGT battery power an LXT tool.

Are batteries interchangeable within the same platform?

Yes. Any LXT battery works across the full range of LXT tools (drills, saws, grinders, etc.), regardless of Ah capacity — higher Ah simply means longer runtime. The same applies within CXT and within XGT.

Do I need to worry about tool/battery compatibility beyond voltage?

Yes — Makita’s Star Protection Computer Controls is a communication system between compatible batteries and tools that helps prevent overloading, over-discharging, and overheating. Always check the platform label (CXT/LXT/XGT) printed on the tool before purchasing batteries, rather than assuming by voltage alone.

Fleet/procurement tip for contractors and MCST teams: standardising your crew on one primary platform (typically LXT for general use) minimises battery/charger inventory complexity. Mixed-platform fleets should track CXT, LXT, and XGT stock separately to avoid charger mismatches on-site.
